The most famous Roman monument in Pula, the start and end point of any sightseeing tour, is the amphitheatre, commonly known as the Arena of Pula, where gladiator fights once took place. It was built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. Today it is a venue for summer events - film festivals, opera seasons, equestrian festivals, concerts and theatre performances. The underground tunnels, once used by gladiators, now serve as an exhibition venue.
